Members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union of (GPRTU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have given the contractor working on the Tamale –Yendi road a two week ultimatum to complete the road or they will block all vehicles plying on it.

The union’s decision was occasioned by what they described as needless deaths as a result of accidents. They blamed the contractor for the accidents that claimed many lives, including that of a manager of Bayport Financial service.

It will be recalled that President Mahama mentioned the Tamale –Yendi road during his state of nation’s address. Eight months after the road was awarded to Fuzak construction company, little has been done on it.

The contractor is expected to reshape the road by tarring it from Tamale to Yendi municipality. It is not clear if the disagreement between the Chiefs of Sang and  Salankpang over a gravel pit the contractor dug has contributed to work stoppage on the project.

The pit, according to Zaa News sources nearly ignited a chieftaincy dispute between Sang and Salankpang in the Mion district of the northern region over royalties.

The Fuzak company was subsequently advised by the Mion district security committee to relocate from the area to avoid being responsible for any eventual flareup.

Commuters say the road was better off than its current state and warned the Fuzak construction company to expedite action on it or they will stop all vehicles from Yendi traveling to and from either Tamale or to Accra.

The GPRTU Yendi chapter secretary spoke to Zaa news about the difficulties drivers  face on the road.

Abdul Majeed Hamidu told Zaa News that, several people have lost their lives including Yendi branch manager of Bayport Financial Service and that the union cannot allow the situation to continue.
