Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, has responded strongly to a media statement issued by MultiChoice Ghana regarding ongoing tensions over DStv subscription pricing in the country.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Minister described MultiChoice’s position as proof that the company does not take Ghanaian consumers seriously. His comments follow a statement from MultiChoice which labeled the Minister’s demand for subscription fee reductions as “not tenable” and described his stance as “regrettable,” despite what it called continued efforts to engage the Minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA) in good faith.

“I have read the release by DStv Ghana and taken full consideration that they vindicate my earlier position—that they simply do not take the Ghanaian people serious enough,” Mr. George wrote.

He pointed to contrasting developments in Nigeria, where similar price hikes were reversed following legal action and intervention by the Nigerian House of Representatives.

“The same group operating in Nigeria reversed price increases when the Nigerian authorities sued them… They complied,” he stated.

The Minister also referenced April 2025, when DStv implemented a 15% price increase in Ghana despite macroeconomic improvements, including a ~10% appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, a drop in inflation by over 5%, and lower fuel prices.

In a striking revelation, Mr. George disclosed a confidential proposal made by MultiChoice during negotiations, which he flatly rejected. The proposal, according to the Minister, involved maintaining the current pricing structure while withholding revenue transfers to the company’s headquarters.

“In all honesty, that offer lacks any logic in my estimation. The essence of my action is to see Ghanaians pay a fair price… How does this proposal solve the real issue?” he queried.

Calling for a broader reset in the relationship between multinational corporations and Ghanaian consumers, the Minister insisted that protecting citizens from exploitative pricing must be at the heart of public service.

“For far too long, corporations have fleeced the Ghanaian people. There has been a RESET… I remain open to ‘constructive engagements’ that are centred on PRICE REDUCTION. Anything else is tangential and of no consequence,” he declared.

While expressing empathy toward local DStv staff, Mr. George urged them to support calls for fair pricing.

The standoff between the Ministry and MultiChoice continues to unfold, with growing public interest and potential regulatory consequences looming.
