The Tamale High Court has placed an injunction on the construction of the V.I.P bus terminal situated at the Tishegu residential area.
Following the failure of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) to respond to residents’ petition on the construction of the terminal, the court had no recourse but to order a temporary halt to the project.
Residents had petitioned the assembly to seek its knowledge about the construction and whether the transport company had acquired a building permit. The assembly failed to respond to their concerns which included imminent insecurity situation, worsening poor sanitary condition, blockage of emergency access to their houses as well as possible prostitution within the vicinity if the terminal is constructed.
A visit by Zaa news team to the site revealed that in spite of the residents’ agitations and V.I.P not in possession of a building permit, the first phase of the construction is almost at its completion stage.
According to the residents, the Northern Road Safety Commission’s feasibility studies point to future danger in the area because it’s a high way. Residents also accused the assembly of failing to respond to their lawyer in writing which ultimately compelled them to seek redress in court.
One of the residents who gave his name only as Mr Faruk expressed shock at their silence. He told Zaa News that they have served TaMA a writ of summon to appear in court after Thursday’s hearing.
The complainants will appear before the Tamale high court 2 on Thursday 27th to seek an extension of the injunction which elapses on Saturday. Fifteen heads of families and property owners in the area are petitioning the TaMA to step in to stop the project.
Mr. Abdul Rahman Baba, Coordinating Director of TaMA in an interview with the GNA on Tuesday acknowledged receipt of a petition from Tishigu residents on the issue but said the company undertaking the project had applied for a permit, adding that a decision on whether or not to grant the permit was yet to be taken.
