The Chairperson of the Women in Poultry Value Chain (WOPVAC) for the North East Region, Sirina Zakaria, has urged the government to provide targeted support to women in the poultry industry to enhance their productivity and economic empowerment.
Speaking in an interview with Zaa News’ reporter Tahiru Apiliye Ibrahim, Madam Zakaria highlighted the crucial role women play in the poultry value chain despite facing numerous setbacks, including limited access to farm implements, financing, and training.

As a poultry farmer with over 190 broilers in Walewale, she emphasized the need for government intervention in the form of funding, technical assistance, and market access to sustain the industry. She also called for gender-sensitive policies that empower women in agriculture, aligning with the broader objectives of International Women’s Day.
She further noted that the lack of essential farm inputs, such as combine harvesters, negatively affects harvesting efficiency, while the high cost of poultry feed and inadequate veterinary services continue to pose significant challenges.
Madam Zakaria appealed to the government to address these concerns through strategic policies and support systems that will enable women poultry farmers to thrive and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s agricultural sector.
