Free Senior High School Registrar Says Northern Scholarship Scheme Intact; It Will Run Concurrently With Free Senior High School Policy.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government Free Senior High School secretariat has assured parents in the three regions of the north that the free SHS policy will not affect the northern scholarship.

According to the secretariat, the free SHS implementation which will commence this month is to lessen the burden of parents and not saddle them with unnecessary debt.

The policy, the secretariat said, will run concurrently with the northern scholarship scheme. The various SHS are expected to provide school uniforms and food through government funding while the secretariat is to procure stationery.

The free SHS is not replacing the northern scholarship, scheme, the secretariat reassured worried stakeholders. The secretariat said, 92 % of the students who passed this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be placed in the various senior high schools across the country.

Mr. Kingsley Agyeman, registrar of the Free SHS registrar,  Mr.Kingsely Agyeman gave the assurance assured when he met journalisst, bursars and some head teachers of SHSs from Northern, Upper West and Upper East region in Tamale on the implementation of the policy.

Any student who meets the necessary grade will get placement, he said. The quality assurance unit of the education ministry will ensure quality, he added.

Funds for implementation of the policy, Mr Agyeman said, are ready and the secretariat is waiting for heads of school schools to provide detailed information on admission before disbursement.

On the fate of the Ghana Secondary Education Program which bans day students from enjoying any scholarship, Mr Agyeman said the FREE SHS policy will not be affected, adding that third and second year student will continue to enjoy scholarship. Feeding arrears

The major problem in the operation of SHS which is the feeding grants, Mr Kingsley said has been solved. However, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior Schools (CHASS) is yet to confirm the availability of feeding grants fund.
