The University for Development Studies (UDS) has re-elected Professor Elliot Haruna Alhassan as its Pro Vice-Chancellor, reaffirming its confidence in his leadership through an emphatic victory in a university-wide Convocation election.
The election, which was conducted across the five campuses of UDS, witnessed high voter participation, with 842 out of 915 eligible members casting their ballots—representing a remarkable turnout of 92%. All votes cast were valid, reflecting a transparent and well-managed electoral process.
In a contest involving three distinguished candidates, Prof. Alhassan emerged as the clear frontrunner, securing 641 votes, which translates to 76.1% of the total. His nearest contender, Prof. Terry Ansah, polled 149 votes (17.7%), while Prof. Stephen Tabiri received 52 votes (6.2%).
Prof. Alhassan’s support was consistent across all campuses, with the highest number of votes coming from Nyankpala Campus (268), followed by Tamale Campus (217), Central Campus (86), City Campus (50), and the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) Campus (20).
Prof. Ansah’s votes were largely drawn from Nyankpala (88) and Tamale Campus (48), while Prof. Tabiri’s strongest showing came from Tamale Campus (28), with additional support from Nyankpala (14) and TTH (10).
The university community has widely commended the peaceful and credible conduct of the election, describing it as a reflection of UDS’ deep-rooted commitment to institutional democracy and academic integrity.
Following the results, the University congratulated Prof. Elliot Haruna Alhassan on his re-election and expressed optimism about his continued leadership in steering the institution toward academic innovation and inclusive development.
Prof. Alhassan now begins his second term as Pro Vice-Chancellor, a role in which he is expected to further consolidate gains made in research, policy, and academic excellence during his previous term.
