Gbulahigu, Tolon District – June 5, 2025
In a significant step towards enhancing access to clean and safe drinking water in Tolon District, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Braimah Seidu, on Wednesday commissioned a newly constructed mechanized borehole at the Gbulahigu A.M.E Zion Primary School.
The project, made possible through a collaboration with Baptist Child, Children Believe, and the Baptist Relief and Development Agency (BREDA), is expected to serve not only the pupils and staff of the school but also members of the surrounding community. The facility is part of ongoing efforts to address water insecurity in the district, especially in rural communities.
At the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Braimah Seidu underscored the importance of clean water to health, education, and general community well-being. He urged parents in the area to take full advantage of the improved school environment by prioritizing their children’s education. “Education is the bedrock of every developed society. Investing in our children today is investing in a better future for Tolon and Ghana,” he said.
The DCE also reaffirmed the government’s broader commitment to solving water access challenges in the Northern Region. Citing a promise made by former President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Seidu said plans are underway to channel water from the White Volta at Yapei to Tamale and adjoining areas, which include Tolon. He said the initiative, once completed, will significantly ease water shortages and improve public health.

Hon. Seidu thanked the partner organizations for their continued support in community development. “We are deeply grateful to Baptist Child Convention, Children Believe, and BREDA for their generous support. This borehole is a lifeline for Gbulahigu, and I hope other communities in the district will also benefit from similar partnerships,” he stated.
The chiefs and residents of Gbulahigu warmly welcomed the development and expressed profound gratitude to the DCE and partner agencies. Speaking on behalf of the community, a local elder noted that the provision of clean water will drastically reduce waterborne diseases and improve school attendance among children who previously walked long distances to fetch water.
The commissioning of the borehole marks a continued effort by the Tolon District Assembly to leverage strategic partnerships in addressing basic infrastructural challenges in the region, with clean water provision being a top priority.
