Tamale, Northern Region – The Zabzugu District Assembly has launched a massive clean-up exercise to rid the township and its environs of mounting waste, in a move widely described as a bold step toward tackling the district’s sanitation challenges.

The exercise, held over the weekend, was spearheaded by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. George Lakoba Tanie, who worked alongside the District Environmental Sanitation Officer, Mr. Mahama Mahami, the Assemblyman for Zabzugu South, Mr. Alone, and other stakeholders. The constituency chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alidu Bawa, popularly known as Aliru-Kpali, and some party executives also joined the effort.

Hon. Tanie described the exercise as “a historic and collective response” to sanitation concerns that have plagued the Zabzugu township for years.

“This is the first time in a long while that such a united effort has been made to confront the sanitation challenge in our district,” he said. “As leaders, it is our duty to set the pace, and the strong participation of stakeholders and residents gives us confidence that this initiative can be sustained.”

The DCE further noted that the Assembly is committed to ensuring that Zabzugu becomes a cleaner, safer, and healthier district, emphasizing that sanitation must remain a shared priority.

Residents who witnessed the exercise commended the Assembly for the initiative and called for it to become a regular feature of community life. “This is long overdue. We are happy to see our leaders leading by example,” a resident remarked.

Environmental Sanitation Officer, Mr. Mahami, cautioned that without behavioral change, such interventions may not yield lasting results. He urged households and businesses to adopt proper waste disposal habits, stressing that cleanliness begins at the community level.

The Zabzugu District Assembly has pledged to intensify public sensitization on sanitation while encouraging residents to take ownership of their surroundings. Leaders believe that the campaign will not only improve public health but also restore dignity and pride to communities across the district.
