The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS)in the northern region has launched its Fire Safety Week celebration in Tamale, focusing on educating residents about fire prevention and safety measures.
Speaking at the event, Assistant Chief Officer Grade II Franklin Masiku, emphasized the need for public awareness to prevent fire outbreaks in the region. This year’s theme, “Fire Safety; A Key to National Development and Foundation for Our Safety and Security,” highlights fire safety’s crucial role in national development and personal security.

As part of the week-long activities, the GNFS will conduct fire safety education programs, health walks, and media engagements to encourage community participation in fire prevention efforts.
Addressing attendees, Mr. Franklin presented alarming fire outbreak statistics. Despite ongoing safety campaigns, fire incidents in the region have increased—from 312 cases in 2012 to 373 in 2024. In January 2025 alone, 65 fire outbreaks were recorded, with 37 incidents occurring between February 1 and 24.
He urged residents to collaborate with the GNFS in firefighting efforts and adhere to fire safety protocols. He also highlighted challenges the service faces, including inadequate logistics, which hinder effective response to fire emergencies.
Meanwhile, the region’s Fire Safety Inspector, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Grade II Jimaima Musah, outlined planned activities for the celebration, calling on the public to actively participate in promoting fire safety awareness.
The GNFS reiterated its commitment to improving fire safety in the region and urged residents to take preventive measures to reduce fire incidents.
