15 disable persons to contest 17th assembly elections

Northern Regional Chairman of the People With Disability (PWDs), Mr Mohammed Seidu Chantimah has urged electorates to vote PWDs contesting the December 17th District Level and Unit Committee elections.

Mr. chantimah disclosed that over 15 members of PDWs in the region including 5 women living with disability are aspiring to become assembly persons at the various MMDCs.

Electing PWDs into the assemblies Mr Chantimah observed will strengthen the local governance system in the country.

Speaking to Zaa News on the International Day of Persons With Disability, Mr. Chantimah reminded duty bearers that access to both public and private buildings is still a major challenge.

He said the PWDs in the past partnered with Ghana Standard Authority and the Ghana Association of Building Contractors to come out with a code or building standard to address the accessibility problem.

An aspiring PWD assemblyman of Kpalbutabu Electoral area in the  Tatale/Sanguli district, Ngban George Nkungime  told Zaa News that the able assembly members do not appreciate PWDs.

Mr. George cited delays and mode of disbursement of PWDs share of the assembly common fund as reasons for him to be elected into the assembly.
