Some alleged witches in the Gushegu Municipality have expressed worry over government’s failure to make cash transfers to them, under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP).
The alleged witches at the Naabuli camp claimed that government has not given them a penny for the past five months. According to them, they are very old and cannot engage in any meaningful economic venture, adding that the delay in the release of the LEAP support has made life unbearable for them and their caregivers.
As a pro-poor government programme, a former minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, proposed the registration of all alleged witches in the Region as beneficiaries of the LEAP programme.
But the inmates of the Naabuli witches camp who spoke to Zaa News said they are unable to renew their expired National Health Insurance cards as a result of government’s inability to disburse the LEAP funds.
They therefore appealed to the Gender, Children and Social Protection ministry to fix the problem in order to ease their economic burden. The alleged witches have also complained about the congested nature of the Naabuli Camp. According to them, they are grouped five in a room, which exposes them to communicable diseases.
