Bui Power Authority is installing 250Mega Watt peak solar plant in Bui enclave to hybridize the 400Mega Watt hydro power plant-Deputy Chief Executive Officer

A Deputy Chief Executive Officer –CEO, in charge of Engineering Services at Bui Power Authority, Ing. Anthony Boye Osafo-Kissi has revealed that the Authority is undertaking a number of new renewable energy projects. He said the authority is installing a 250Mega Watt peak solar plant in the Bui enclave to hybridize the 400Mega Watt hydro power plant.
According to him, the first Phase of this project, a 50Megawatt peak solar park (the largest so far in Ghana) was completed earlier this year and has been connected to the national grid. The authority he indicates has also installed a one (1) Megawatt Floating solar park on the Bui reservoir which is the first of its kind in the West African sub-region, adding that they are expanding this to 5Mega Watt peak. Ing. Anthony Boye further mentioned that the authority has also constructed the first ever Mini Hydropower Plant in Tsatsadu in the Volta region, which was commissioned last year by President Akuffo Addo.
The Bui Power Authority is the state institution that is managing the second largest hydro power plant in Ghana, situated on the Black Volta in the Savanna Region. Quite recently H.E the President through an Act of Parliament gave the Authority an additional mandate to generate power from other renewable and clean energy sources on behalf of the state.
The Deputy CEO mentioned this at the Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge at Tamale Senior high school in Tamale. The Challenge was the second edition with seven participatory SHS’s in the region. Business Senior High School- BISCO emerged winner and will be representing the entire region at the zonal level in Accra. Ing. Anthony Boye after the competition observed that the deployment of renewable energy to meet the growing energy demand of future generations is therefore an excellent approach to help mitigate climate change.
The challenge is initiated by the Energy Commission in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service to provide education and awareness on renewable energy and energy efficiency among various SHSs and Technical institutions in the country.
He said the Bui Power Authority which is a major sponsor for the challenge is therefore proud to partner the Energy Commission for the 2021 SHS Renewable Energy Challenge which is aimed to help uncover renewable energy talent hidden in students. He however, promised that, this years’ challenge will be exciting with fantastic packages for the top three winners of the competition.
