‎Dema-Naa Basha Calls for Special Prosecutor’s Resignation Over Ofori-Atta Exit

‎Tamale, November 7, 2025 — The North America Dema-Naa, Basha Iddrisu, who serves as the Dagbon Youth Chief in the Diaspora, has called for the immediate resignation of Ghana’s Special Prosecutor following what he describes as a “public admission of failure” to prevent former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from leaving the country.

‎In a statement issued on Friday, Dema-Naa Basha Iddrisu said the Special Prosecutor’s own testimony and recent public comments revealed that he was unable to stop Mr. Ofori-Atta’s departure due to alleged political interference from “the highest office of the land”—a reference to the President, whom the Special Prosecutor reportedly described as his cousin.

‎According to the statement, this admission “represents a betrayal of his oath of office and a deep violation of the trust and confidence reposed in him by the Ghanaian people.”

‎“The Office of the Special Prosecutor was created to restore integrity and deter corruption. The Special Prosecutor’s failure and acceptance of it have gravely undermined the mission of the office,” Dema-Naa Basha noted, stressing that “if he acknowledges his incapacity to act impartially because of family ties or political pressure, then resignation is the only honorable course.”

‎He further recalled his previous remarks in support of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) campaign, which he said was a major factor behind Ghanaians’ confidence in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its 2024 election promise under President John Dramani Mahama to retrieve stolen state assets.

‎“If the Special Prosecutor, whose mandate it is to lead this effort, has publicly admitted the task is above him, then he has no locus occupying the position,” he stated.

‎The Dagbon Youth Chief emphasized that Ghana’s anti-corruption institutions must remain independent of political or familial interests, describing the oath of office as “a sacred covenant with the nation, not with individuals.”

‎He therefore urged the President to “take the necessary steps to relieve the Special Prosecutor of his duties should he fail to voluntarily resign.”
