The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has leased out a portion of the Tamale timber market to a private business, Fatuh-Kareeban Company. The 1.38 acres of land have been leased to the private developer for 50 years for an amount of GHS 621, according to Alhassan Suhuyini, member of parliament for Tamale North constituency.
Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini who is also a member of parliament’s lands and natural resources committee, has chastised the Akufo Addo government for stripping naked popular forest reserves in the country. He said the continuous destruction of lands and forest reserves is unconscionable and should not be condoned for any reason.
Recounting the Akonta mining company destruction of the Tano Nimiri forest reserve and the Achimota forest leasing by Sir John, Alhassan Suhuyini noted government has a deliberate attempt to enrich their party boys through the illegal sale of the country’s forest reserves.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Abu Jinapor had confirmed that, as part of the re-development scheme, a portion of the timber market land, measuring approximately one point three eight acres (1.38 acres), had been granted to Fatuh-Kareeban Company for a term of 50 years. The lease, the minister said, took effect on August 29th 2020.
However, investigations by the Tamale North member of parliament revealed that the total cost of the lease was GHS 621 for a period of 50 years. Fatuh-Kareeban Company has since been calling for the evacuation of many artisans and business men to pave way for development. Though his decision has faced a stiff rejection by the artisans and people of Tamale, the lands commission and the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly continue to pile pressure.
Suhuyini has therefore called on all that matters to join hands to contest what he described as “a wicked decision” by government.
Below is the write up of Alhassan Suhuyini
1.38 ACRES OF TAMALE WATER WORKS FOREST RESERVE WAS SOLD FOR (Ghc 621.)
Six Hundred and twenty-one Ghana Cedis only.
The unconscionable destruction of our lands and forests by this administration is simply unfathomable. Did I hear Kakum National Park? Ahhba!!
Despite the president clearing Akonta mining, evidence of their destruction of the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve abound. Then the President Degazetted the Achimota Forest to justify its rape.
Then the Tamale Water works Forest Reserve (Timber Market) was leased for 50 years at a price of six hundred and twenty-one Ghana Cedis 621.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources on 20/06/23 noted that as part of the re-development scheme, by a lease dated 15th December 2020, but taking effect from 29th August 2020, a portion of the land, measuring approximately one point three eight acres (1.38 acres) had been granted to Fatuh-Kareeban Company, for a term of 50 years.
