Involve chiefs in northern Ghana in Galamsey fight-Nanton Naa urges gov’t

Paramount Chief of Nanton Traditional area, Nanton Naa Mahamadu Baawa V has urged the government to involve chiefs in northern Ghana in its quest to fight illegal mining known as Galamsey.

According to Nanton Naa, the issue of galamsey and pollution of rivers and its tributaries is a national issue, and all stakeholders must be involve finding solution to it.

Speaking at the Northern Ghana Development Conference in Tamale, Nanton Naa suggested that chiefs in collaboration with assembly and the citizenry should lead the fight against galamsey activities in the water bodies to save lives and greater commitment from the chiefs who superintend over every land.  

’’In the future our people may not be able to buy bottled water or imported water; Chiefs in northern Ghana should be targeted for education to have a no-nonsense approach to water pollution’’, Nanton Naa warned.

 Speaking at the conference, Nanton Naa described the conference as a positive rise for development, adding it is a collective decision for northern Ghana.

Development in northern Ghana, the chief noted, needs a multisectoral and inclusive and sustained approach. The approaches Nanton Naa mentions include equitable resource distribution, climate resilience, rural transformation, youth empowerment and peace governance. 

 Nanton Naa who chaired the conference said the people in the north in future may not be able to buy water and chiefs in the north should be targeted in the fight against galamsey.

The conference under the Theme; Conference of the northern people, leaders and partners brought together members of parliament across political dived, paramount chiefs, academia and development partners.
