NCA Suspends Nine Radio Stations Over Regulatory Breaches Despite Earlier Presidential Pardon

Tamale, August 12, 2025 — The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine radio stations across Ghana for breaching the country’s broadcasting regulations, despite a recent presidential pardon that had granted them extra time to comply.

The move follows the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted in July by President John Dramani Mahama. The presidential intervention, described at the time as a “regulatory amnesty,” was meant to give defaulting stations a final opportunity to rectify violations of the laws governing FM broadcasting.

While the majority of affected stations took steps to address their breaches within the extended deadline, six stations failed to take any remedial action. Their authorisations have now been suspended. The affected stations are: Donplus Multimedia Limited – 105.9 MHz (Accra), Dreams Ghana Media Limited – 104.9 MHz (Kumasi), Jam Multimedia Limited – 101.3 MHz (Takoradi), Jewel Group Limited – 102.7 MHz (Ho), Kpandai Star Community Radio – 107.3 MHz (Kpandai), and Unique Gateway Communication Limited – 105.7 MHz (Nkawkaw).

In addition, three other stations that partially complied were found to be operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance — a violation of Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991). Infractions included the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating transmitters at unapproved locations. These stations are: Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited – 95.9 MHz (New Abirem), Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited – 101.3 MHz (Kintampo), and Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited – 101.3 MHz (Duayaw Nkwanta).

In a statement issued yesterday, the NCA stressed that the grace period granted by the President was intended as a last chance for stations to regularise their operations. The Authority reiterated its commitment to enforcing compliance with all authorisation conditions and the laws governing broadcasting in Ghana, warning that future breaches will attract similar sanctions.
