Hundreds of hectors of farmlands have been submerged at Kpasenkpe in the Mamprugu Moaduri District of the North East region.
A heavy downpour which lasted for over 2 hours on Tuesday afternoon destroyed several acres of maize farms leaving owners of the farms in despair.
Other crops such as groundnut, beans, cowpea, vegetables and maize harvested awaiting collection have all been washed away by the flood waters.
Affected farmers expressed worry over the Tuesday afternoon havoc. They fear food insecurity could hit the area if no support is extended to them.
Residents are worried that, the destruction of their farmlands would have a greater effect on their family’s livelihoods.
According to them, their families education and survival depends largely on farming and therefore appealed to government for support.
Some of the residents who spoke to Zaa Radio indicated that flooding of farms at Kpansenkpe has become an annual affair.
Famers in the area loses substantial amount of their food crops to floods every year but no solution has been found yet to the situation. The situation become even worse when the bagre dam at neighbouring Burkinafaso is spilled out.
Mr. Seidu Jerimiah, a development advocate in the area while sympathizing with the affected farmers call for government’s assistance.
He blamed the annual flooding of Kpasenkpe to lack of proper drain management by authority in the Mampurgu Moaduri district.
Residents were also cut off from the District capital as water took over roads linking the communities to the capital due to their deplorable nature.
Some homes including the Yagaba market were all flooded. The Yagaba market day which falls on Tuesdays was truncated leaving traders dejected.
Meanwhile the National Disaster Management Organization in the region is yet to ascertain the extent of damage for possible support.
