Sungmaana Youth Association holds 4th annual reunion in Tamale with call for unity and mutual support
The Sungmaana Youth Association (SYA) has held its 4th Annual Waala Muslim Get-Together and Reunion in Tamale with a call on members to uphold unity, mutual support, and the promotion of Waala cultural values.
The event, held under the theme “Building a Foundation for Waala Tradition in Tamale,” brought together Waala natives residing in Tamale and other parts of the country to reflect on their shared identity and strengthen community ties.
Delivering the keynote address, the Chief Executive Officer of Zakat Fund Ghana, Alhaji Adam Baba Musah, urged the youth to support one another in fostering development while preserving the rich traditions and values of the Waala people. He emphasized that collective effort and faith-based cooperation remain vital tools for community progress.

Guest speaker, Sheikh Ahmed Yakubu Sidik, the Deputy Regional Chief Imam of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’a (ASWAJ) in the Upper West Region, encouraged members to renew their faith and uphold Islamic principles in their daily lives. He noted that unity, discipline, and service to humanity are key to sustaining both spiritual and social growth.
On his part, the President of the Sungmaana Youth Association, Mohammed Lukman, highlighted the essence of the annual reunion, describing it as an avenue to promote the Waala identity and foster solidarity among members. He commended the leadership and members of the Association for their continued dedication and commitment to its vision.
Founded in January 2018 by Waala Muslim youth in Tamale, the Sungmaana Youth Association seeks to build unity, uphold Islamic values, preserve cultural heritage, and promote the welfare and empowerment of its members. Through initiatives such as the SYA Mutual Fund, the Association provides financial support for members during marriage, childbirth, bereavement, hospitalization, and other life events.
The reunion also featured Islamic sermons, cultural performances, and interactive discussions on youth empowerment, economic cooperation, and community development.
The Sungmaana Youth Association continues to stand as a symbol of unity, compassion, and shared responsibility — fostering welfare and growth among Waala Muslims in Tamale and beyond.
