Construction of the Tamale Inter Change has begun in earnest, Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed has said.
The Sinohydro Company, a Chinese construction firm who has been awarded the contract, the minister explained, has winded up recruitment of core workers and will soon hit areas earmarked for the inter change in Tamale.
Compensation issues for structures to be affected by the inter change have already been addressed, Mr Saeed said.
The contractors, he said will be stationed at the old TYSEC Yard through the construction period. On April 10th this year, the president, Nana Akufou Addo cut the sod for the construction of the Interchange.
But almost four months after the ceremony, the people in the north are yet to witness the physical work. However, Mr Saeed insisted work on the project is ongoing and that the government is keeping the contractors on their toes to meet the 30 months’ calendar timeline.
Justifying the inter change project among many challenges confronting the north, Mr Saeed said he personally requested for the inter change because of the position of Tamale in the sub region. He mentioned the international airport and its associated transportation traffic.
The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, he hinted, will be in Tamale next month to cut the sod for work to begin on the second phase of the Tamale International Airport.
This, he said are all parts of reasons for the central business district to be free from traffic and the inter change will eased the congestion.
He explained that, even though there are other important developmental issues bothering the region, the inter change is equally important but won’t divert attention from other critical areas.
He advised those already employed and those yet to be employed by the Chinese company not to engage in the stealing of materials. He stated that he will personal ensure that those who do that are arrested and prosecuted.
