‎The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Zabzugu, Hon. George Lakoba Tanei, has announced a series of new infrastructure projects worth over GH¢4.49 million aimed at improving education, healthcare, water access, and sanitation across the district.

‎He made the announcement during the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Zabzugu District Assembly, held at the Assembly Hall on Thursday, October 23, 2025, where he presented his sessional address in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

‎New Projects Across Communities

‎According to Hon. Tanei, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has approved the commencement of several projects under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

‎The projects include the construction of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds and 2-seater KVIP toilets at Mbebudo and Poagmado, a maternity block at Gor-Tanei, a 6-unit classroom block at Omoaldo, and a 3-unit classroom block at Woribogu.

‎Five solar-powered mechanized boreholes are also to be drilled at Okudu, Mogneigo, Obabido, Lagbani, and Maa, while the DCE’s official residence in Zabzugu will undergo rehabilitation. Contracts for the projects, valued at GH¢4,495,524.30, were signed on October 3, 2025, with sod-cutting ceremonies held on October 6 to mark the start of construction.

‎Revenue Challenges and Ex-Gratia Payment

‎The DCE expressed concern over the Assembly’s declining Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), noting that only GH¢161,550, representing 55.7 percent of the targeted GH¢290,000, had been mobilized as of September 2025.

‎He attributed the shortfall to low compliance and misunderstanding among residents and called for renewed commitment from Assembly Members, Area Council Chairpersons, and the Finance Department to boost local revenue collection.

‎On the payment of end-of-service emoluments (ex-gratia) for the 2023 batch of Assembly Members, Hon. Tanei confirmed that each member is entitled to GH¢2,000 as directed by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development. However, the funds are expected to come from local revenue sources, which remain constrained.

‎Cattle Market and Local Economy

‎The DCE disclosed that a new cattle market has been completed near Tasundo along the Zabzugu–Tatale road, in collaboration with the Zabzugu Traditional Authority.

‎He said the market is expected to expand livestock trade, improve access to meat, and enhance the district’s internally generated revenue.

‎Commendation and Outlook

‎Hon. Tanei commended the Ministry of Local Government and the Institute of Local Government Studies for organizing a training programme to strengthen the capacity of Assembly Members, enabling them to play a more active role in local governance.

‎He called for unity and dedication among Assembly Members and staff to accelerate the district’s development agenda.

‎This report is based on the official sessional address delivered by Hon. George Lakoba Tanei, District Chief Executive for Zabzugu, during the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Zabzugu District Assembly on October 23, 2025.
