The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has taken a significant step towards implementing the NDC government’s promise to pay monthly allowances to Assembly Members across Ghana. In a wireless message to Regional Ministers and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), the Ministry has requested details of Honorable Assembly Members in their respective districts.

This development is in line with the government’s agenda, as outlined in the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy (Page 73, Section 395). The promise to pay Assembly Members’ allowances was a key campaign pledge made by the NDC and John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 elections. Specifically, Mahama pledged to pay GHC1,000 monthly to Assembly Members, emphasizing the need to prioritize decentralization and empower local governance.

The Chief Director of the Ministry, Amin Abdul Rahaman, has requested that the information be submitted using a specified template via email to the Decentralization Unit by Friday, May 9, 2025. The matter has been marked urgent, with a request for timely submission.

This move aims to enhance the effectiveness of Assembly Members in their critical roles at the local level, boosting their morale and enabling them to execute responsibilities with greater efficiency. The payment of allowances to Assembly Members is a crucial step towards strengthening local governance and decentralization in Ghana. By fulfilling this campaign promise, the government demonstrates its commitment to empowering local leaders and promoting development at the grassroots level.

The government’s initiative to pay monthly allowances to Assembly Members is a significant development in Ghana’s local governance landscape. As the implementation progresses, it is expected that this move will have a positive impact on the effectiveness of Assembly Members and the overall development of their Electoral Areas.
