The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has described the courtesy call by the Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Highness Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, on President John Dramani Mahama as a momentous occasion that speaks to Ghana’s enduring respect for tradition, peace, and national unity.

Hon. Haruna, who led his colleague Members of Parliament from the Northern Caucus to accompany the revered monarch to the Flagstaff House, emphasized the significance of the visit—not only as a symbolic gesture, but as a reaffirmation of the deep bond between traditional leadership and democratic governance.

“This is the first official visit by His Royal Highness to the President since his assumption of office, and it could not have come at a more meaningful time,” Hon. Haruna remarked. “As a son of Dagbon and a servant of the Republic, I consider it a great honour to stand beside our King as he extends the blessings and support of our people to the President of Ghana.”

The Yaa Naa, during the engagement, congratulated President Mahama on his electoral victory and pledged the full support of the Dagbon Traditional Council to his administration. “My sub-chiefs and I are solidly behind your government,” the Overlord declared, underscoring the unity and confidence of Dagbon in the leadership of President Mahama.

President Mahama, in response, warmly welcomed the King and his entourage, expressing profound gratitude for the visit. He reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises, with particular emphasis on the Tamale Water Project—an initiative he described as essential to addressing the long-standing water challenges in the Northern Region.

Hon. Haruna added that the presence of the Yaa Naa at the seat of government was more than ceremonial. “It is a statement that Ghana’s forward march must be anchored in collaboration—with our traditional institutions, with our people, and with the values that bind us together,” he said. “The King’s presence today reminded us that true leadership is about continuity, cultural consciousness, and collective progress.”

The visit concluded with moments of warmth and mutual respect, as the Presidency opened its doors not only to a King, but to a Kingdom whose voice continues to shape the moral and cultural conscience of the nation.
