Sam George Rebuts Bribery Allegations Over Lexus Vehicle Purchase

0

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has vehemently denied allegations by Mr. P.K. Sarpong suggesting that a 2024 Lexus LX600 vehicle he recently acquired was a gift from a businessman, branding the claim as “vile, evil and dishonest.”In a strongly worded public statement on Monday, the MP described the allegation as an orchestrated attempt to tarnish his reputation and questioned the integrity of his accuser.“

I have decided to let the world see how dishonest and untruthful you are,” Sam George stated. “I am a serving Member of Parliament of Ghana who is entitled to a car loan. How a vehicle I purchased under that scheme becomes a gift from a businessman can only be a vile, evil and dishonest claim.”

He further stated that he has always upheld transparency and accountability as a public officer and warned of legal consequences if a public apology is not rendered. “Apologise or prepare to face the consequences before the law,” he cautioned.

A letter from the Clerk to Parliament dated December 20, 2024, confirms that Hon. Sam George purchased the vehicle through the official Parliamentary Service loan facility in collaboration with the National Investment Bank. The vehicle—a 2024 Lexus LX600 with chassis number JTJAB7CX5R4061993—was procured from the United States and is to be registered in the joint names of the MP and the bank. The Parliamentary Service, in its correspondence, requested a deferment of statutory payments to facilitate the clearing of the vehicle.

In a subsequent communication, the Ministry of Finance approved a full exemption of all relevant taxes and duties, including import duties, VAT, GETFUND, NHIL, and others. The approval was granted in accordance with Parliamentary Resolution No. PS/CS/80/178 and Article 174(2) of the Constitution of Ghana.

According to the exemption letter signed by Hon. Abena Osei-Asare, Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, any future sale or transfer of the vehicle to a third party would attract the applicable taxes and duties.

The controversy stems from a post by political commentator P.K. Sarpong, who insinuated that the luxury vehicle was a bribe or gift. The post sparked outrage online, prompting Sam George to issue a formal rebuttal with accompanying documentation. Analysts say this incident highlights the deepening scrutiny of MPs’ benefits and asset acquisition processes amid growing concerns about political accountability.

As public debate continues, Hon. Sam George has positioned himself for legal redress, signaling a broader confrontation over the politicization of personal and parliamentary entitlements.
