Zabzugu, Northern Region — In what many residents describe as a lifeline for struggling families, the Member of Parliament for Zabzugu Constituency, Hon. Alhaji Alhassan Umar, is set to disburse GH¢200,000 to support the education of 130 brilliant but needy tertiary students.
The initiative, which will be launched on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the Zabzugu District Assembly Main Hall, is part of the MP’s broader commitment to improving access to education in his constituency. Each beneficiary student is expected to receive GH¢1,500 to GHC 2,000 as financial support for the 2025/2026 academic year.

For Alhaji Alhassan Umar, the decision to support needy students is deeply personal. Growing up in a peasant farming community, he recalls the struggles of mobilizing funds for school fees — a reality that forced many of his peers to abandon their education.
“I have been in their shoes before. I know how it feels when brilliant students cannot continue their education because of money. It would be difficult for me to watch the youth of Zabzugu go through the same bitter experiences today,” the MP said in an interview.
He stressed that the initiative fulfills a campaign promise he made to his constituents, explaining that education remains one of the surest tools for lifting families out of poverty.
Across Zabzugu Constituency, anticipation is high as families prepare for the disbursement short ceremony. For many, the MP’s intervention comes as a timely relief. Parents who have been struggling to gather money for tuition, accommodation, and books see this as a critical lifeline.
Community leaders also believe the initiative will inspire a new wave of ambition among young people. “This support is not just about money,” one resident remarked. “It is about giving hope and reminding our children that their dreams are valid, no matter their background.”
Since assuming office, Hon. Alhassan Umar has positioned education at the center of his leadership style. From classroom infrastructure he is set to invest resources in, to scholarship support, he has often argued that education is the foundation for sustainable development in Zabzugu.

This latest gesture, observers say, highlights his long-term vision of building a constituency where no child is denied education because of financial challenges.
The disbursement ceremony will be held in the presence of beneficiary students, their families, traditional authorities, and education stakeholders. The program will not only mark the financial support but will also serve as a platform for the MP to outline his broader education agenda for the constituency.
Zaa Multimedia has confirmed that it will cover the entire event and later broadcast it on both radio and television for its audiences across the Northern Region and beyond.
For the people of Zabzugu, this intervention represents more than financial relief — it is a symbol of leadership, empathy, and service. As one community elder put it: “Our MP has shown that he remembers where he came from. Supporting these students will leave a mark on families for generations.”
If successfully implemented, the initiative will not only bring smiles to the faces of 130 students but will also cement Hon. Alhaji Alhassan Umar’s reputation as a selfless leader committed to the empowerment of his people through education.
