Thousands of Muslims converged at the Savelugu Eidni Park on Saturday to observe Eid al-Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice. The occasion was marked by special congregational prayers, reflections on sacrifice and obedience, and renewed calls for peace, discipline, and national unity.

The festival, which commemorates the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command, brought together Muslims from all walks of life.

Delivering the sermon, the Chief Imam of Savelugu cautioned worshippers against substance abuse. He stressed that Islam forbids the consumption of any substance that impairs judgment. He did not mince words when he declared that alcohol is haram (forbidden), adding that Muslims are not permitted to consume dog meat or profit from selling dogs.

Echoing this concern, the Paramount Chief of the Savelugu Traditional Area, Yoo Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani II, issued a stern warning to the youth of Dagbon against drug abuse. Speaking after the Eid prayers, he described the growing trend of substance abuse as a serious threat to the future of the youth and called for collective efforts to curb it.

He praised the security services in Savelugu for their ongoing efforts to clamp down on drug peddlers and called on parents to be more responsible in guiding their children, describing them as the future leaders of the society.

“I want to send a clear message to those selling drugs: stop the illegal trade before the law catches up with you,” the Chief warned.

He also commended the Savelugu Concerned Citizens for their volunteer work in fighting illicit drugs in the community, urging them to remain steadfast in their mission to safeguard the town’s future.

In an interview with Zaa News, Yoo Naa emphasized the devastating consequences of drug abuse, including mental health disorders, depression, and physical harm. He urged other traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and Islamic scholars across Dagbon to rise and confront the menace of substance abuse head-on.
