Parents Accuse Savelugu Police of Shielding Suspected Baby Thief

The parents of a four-month-old girl in the Savelugu Municipality have accused the Savelugu Divisional Police Command of attempting to cover up a suspected case of baby theft.

According to the aggrieved parents, the incident occurred in April 2023 when a young woman allegedly stole their then 38-day-old baby from her deaf mother while she was asleep. The theft took place around 1 PM, and it was only discovered when the baby’s grandmother raised an alarm, alerting residents in the area.

Following a frantic search, the suspect was found with the baby at the Yoo Naa’s palace. She reportedly claimed the child was hers and that she needed transport fare to return to Kumasi. The palace elders, however, detained her for questioning, during which it became clear the baby was not hers.

The case was promptly reported to the Savelugu Divisional Police Command by the Assembly Member for Limam Fong. However, the family alleges that instead of pursuing the baby theft investigation, the police shifted focus.

According to the parents, the police invited Awudu Haruna, the elder brother of the baby’s father, for questioning — not in relation to the theft — but over allegations of defilement made by the suspect. This development shocked the family, who questioned the basis of the sudden turn of events.

“We are demanding credible evidence to back the police’s claim of defilement. The issue at hand is baby theft. Why are the police ignoring that?” the baby’s father queried.

The parents further allege that a physician at the Savelugu Hospital refused to issue a medical report on the alleged defilement, stating that he had not examined the suspect and could not ethically sign such a document. This raised concerns among the family that a possible fake medical report may have been used by the police.

Despite their calls for a proper investigation into the suspected baby theft, the family claims the police have processed Awudu Haruna for court, sidelining the original complaint.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), Vincencial Aboagye, confirmed that the case was currently before the court. However, he declined to provide further details, referring inquiries to the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service in Accra.

The family is calling for an independent investigation to ensure justice is served for their child and the accused.
