The Women in Local Leadership (WILL) project, a partnership for municipal innovation, has marked International Women’s Day with a special event in Walewale. The initiative, aimed at promoting women’s empowerment and inclusive governance, brought together women leaders from various fields to celebrate the occasion.
The event featured discussions on the significance of women’s participation in local governance and the challenges they face. Women leaders shared their experiences and successes in promoting inclusive governance and delivering gender-responsive services.

Addressing the gathering, the Assembly Member for Kperiga Electoral Area, Jamila Alhassan, encouraged women to participate actively in leadership roles. She cited Ghana’s first female Vice President, Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as an inspiring example of women breaking barriers in leadership.
A Public Health Nurse at the North East Regional Health Directorate, Madam Joyce Sandow, highlighted ongoing efforts to combat teenage pregnancy in the region. She urged parents to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting the girl-child from becoming a victim of early pregnancies.
The WILL project is a partnership between the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and local government associations in Ghana, Benin, Zambia, Sri Lanka, and other countries. The initiative seeks to eliminate barriers to women’s participation in public life and enhance their access to municipal services.
