‎The Regent of Yelzoli, Tung-Lana Alhaji Muhammad Ibn Umar, has called on the people of Zabzugu District to put aside tribal divisions and embrace peace as the bedrock of development. He made the appeal as Special Guest of Honour at the 2025 Damba Homecoming Football Gala in Yelzoli on Sunday, where Yelizoli FC emerged champions after defeating Kpukpaligu FC.

‎“For me, it is not only Yelizoli FC that has won, and it is not only Zabzugu people who have won. All the teams in my traditional area have won through participation with unity of purpose,” the Regent said.

‎He praised the role of Zabzugu indigenes living outside the district, saying their contributions were vital to the success of the event. “Some people ask what those outside have done. But the question should be, what have you yourself done to support your communities—Kpukpaligu, Tatale, Nakpali, Gor-Tanie, and others?” he asked.

The Regent  cautioned against tribal bigotry, warning that it undermines social harmony. “Let us not divide ourselves into Dagombas, Konkombas, Kabores, Zambarima, Fulbes, or Basares. Let us all see ourselves as one people of Zabzugu District. That is what will augur well for the peace and unity we are praying for,” he stressed.

‎The Regent also addressed the growing problem of drug abuse and related crimes in the district. “Those involved in wee smoking, those with criminal minds, 419 individuals, and those selling drug substances will soon be dealt with decisively and in accordance with the laws of the country,” he warned.

‎The gala, organized as part of the annual Damba celebrations, drew participation from several communities and was hailed as a unifying event for the diverse groups in the district.
