The Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Abdulai Andani Yakubu has urged the local government ministry to institute measures hat would curb the politicization of district level elections in Ghana.
The over politicization according to the Kampakuya Naa is bringing a lot of problems in most of the districts in the northern region and something has to be done immediately about it.
The partisan nature he noted was common in the Yendi municipality and confirmation of Metropolitan,Municpal and District Chief Executives has become a herculean task for governments because of the entrench positions some assembly members normally take.
The Kampakuya Naa who is also the acting president of the Dagbon Traditional Council suggested a mass education to sensitize the citizenry on the need to de-politicize it and participate actively.
He also called on the people to show keen interest in the district level elections. The electorates he observed are more interested in parliamentary elects because aspirants can get them something.”You need to looks NPP and NDC assemblymen syndrome very carefully;assembly elections are the start of local governance”,Kampakuya Naa told local government minister, Julius Debra.
The minister was at the Gbewaa palace in Yendi to a pay a curtesy call on the Kampakuya Naa.
Even though by law assembly elections are non-partisan, political parties support aspirants loyal to them. Ghanaians will go to the polls on Tuesday March 3, 2015 to elect assembly members in the various electoral areas.
