Stakeholders in Water and Sanitation sector from the three northern regions have gather in Tamale for a one week special training program on possible ways to end open defecation in the area.
The training which is being supported by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) is aimed at achieving free defecation in the three northern regions.
Our reporter, Issah Fawziyya who is attending the training reports that, participants of the training of trainers on the firts day were taken through the rudiment and the relevant information on the need to end ODF in the north. The training of trainers’ workshop is being organized by Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) foundation.
Participants are drawn from representatives from communities, NGOs in Water and Sanitation in the districts of the northern region.
Addressing participants, the initiator and leader of CLTS team, Dr kamal Kar mentioned Bunkpurugu/yunyoo west, and central Gonja and Saboba districts as the low performing sanitation districts on CLTS and urged them to work hard to improve sanitation in their respective areas and also to catch up with the rest of the districts in the country.
Dr Kamal Kar said northern region is one of the regions selected regions for special training because it is lacking behind interms of sanitation among the regions in Ghana. Dr Kamal said the worse affected region was Upper East flow by Upper West and the northern region hard highest open defecators living in northern region. These regions according to Dr Kamal, is the regions where access to basic sanitation is pretty low
The training is on the theme; scaling up CLTS making northern region open free defecation; (ODF).
