Students from the Tamale Girls International School are appealing to government and philanthropists to come to their aid on their current predicament.
The helpless students say, they have been left to their own fate by the school authorities and their lives are in danger.
According to the students, their new campus located at Datoyili along Tamale Kumasi road lacks almost all the basic social amenities and does not befit the status of a boarding facility.
The students mentioned lack of potable drinking water, inadequate teachers and accommodation as some of the major problems confronting them.
Some students who spoke to Zaa NEWS on condition of anonymity for fear of being victimized say over fifty of them live in one room and appealed to the education authorities to come to their aid.
The situation has culminated in about twenty of the students being hospitalized in the various hospitals of the Tamale metropolis due to the drinking of contaminated water.
Narrating their ordeal to Zaa news at the Tamale West Hospital, about ten students who were hospitalized say there is no other alternative to the water source at their new site, after the main pipeline to the school stopped flowing early September this year.
The situation compelled the girls to fetch water from any source including running water from nearby farms.
The students say they suspect their only source of water have been contaminated with chemicals. They say they are living with reptiles and other dangerous animals and that the electricity to the school is nothing to write home about.
Responding to the student’s predicament, the proprietor of the school, Albert Atutiga admitted the problem in the school, but roll out any possible contamination of their meals as claim by the students. He explained that the school has water reservoirs and that he does not expect the students to fetch water from any other source.
Hospital authorities say the students are in stable condition, but they are unable to establish the exact cause of the diarrhea and vomiting of the students.
A Nurse in-charge of the female ward at the Tamale west hospital, Madam Victoria told Zaa News that the matter was a public health issue and has been referred to the public health directorate of the Ghana health service in the northern region for further investigation. She added that the students are responding to treatment
