Stakeholders in the road safety sector in the northern region are expressing worry over the growing lawlessness by some motorists in the region.
The lawlessness, according to the stakeholders, has led to the increasing road crashes in the northern region and are therefore calling for concerted effort by all to deal with the menace to prevent innocent lives from being lost.
This came to light at the Northern regional transport union award, organized by the northern regional road safety commission.
The awards according to the organizers, was to provide some incentives to the public transport unions which have excelled in incorporating safety in their core routine activities to prevent unnecessary road crashes.
The Northern regional Manager of Road Safety Commission, Ayatah Alexander said experience has shown that road safety has received great support from influential people in the society which has led to some significant gains in reducing the carnage on the roads.
Mr. Alexander said the provisional census on the roads in northern region is not the best as the figures keep on increasing.
The region was expected to reduce road crashes from 154 killed in 2011 to 119 in 2012. The figure he said implies a reduction of 23 percent translating to 25 deaths being prevented.
The NRSC's strategy spans from 2011 to 2020, which coincides with the United Nation Decade of Action.
The nine months in the 2012, Mr. Alexander said witnessed 52 deaths while total number of injured stood at 142.
He said everybody is at risk and that the success of reducing road crashes would depend on the collective efforts of the general public, especially opinion leaders such as chiefs and political authorities among others.
Mr. Alexander also urged political activists to be careful on the roads as the elections and Christmas periods draw closer. The best transport union went to the Imperial Transport Company Limited in the region. Its northern regional manager, Chief Adam Lansah, Wurishe Naa said the company has worked hard over years for it and that passenger satisfaction was their prime interest.
He said Imperial Company limited is the only transport company in Ghana using the ’’Scannia’’ Buses which was best buses in the transport sector though very expensive.
In all, three transport unions were awarded for their contribution in the transport sector of the region
