Hundreds of youth in the Kumbungu district have embarked on what appears to the biggest demonstration ever in the history of the area against bad road network.
The youth drawn from Dalun, Kumbungu and other adjourning communities poured to the street started from Dalun where the Ghana Water company limited treatment plant is situated and match through Saakabu and later to Kumbungu where they presented their petition to the assembly.
Before the angry youth could get to Kumbungu, there were threats on the youth to abandon their well planned demonstration but that did not deter them from carrying their legitimate democratic rights to press home their demands.
The angry youth holds plaque cards some of which reads; no road, no sea sand, politicians 2016 is just at the corner, Mr president look into our face we need change roads, we are fed up with dust amongst others.
They expressed their greatest displeasure at the deplorable nature of Tamale-Kumbungu and Dalun road. The youth said the bad road network is having a tall on farmers, business and shorting the live span of vehicles plying on the road.
The road which is about 14 kilometers the youth said has been in a deplorable state for years without attention by government and accused the assembly of looking on unconcern. According to them, the many promises by politicians will no longer be tolerated.
The nature of the road the youth said has led to many people losing their lives, difficulty in transporting patients to the nearest referral hospital in Tamale on time thereby complicating their conditions.
Traveling on the road during the dry season poses a great threat to the health of motorists as it becomes very dusty and in the rainy season, the road gets waterlogged rendering most parts of the district inaccessible.
The people in the area are of opinion that the construction of the road will have a number of positive effects on their lives which includes, linking up the district to the regional capital thereby enhancing business activities of the people, which will in turn improve their economic standard, making health centers accessible in order to reduce the stress of reaching the health centers for treatment.
The Kumbungu youth are therefore calling on district assembly and the government to immediately take steps to construct the road or prepared for a series of demonstration. Work on the road has stall for months now angering residents plying on the road. When Zaa News contacted the Managing Director of Savanna Construction Company Limited, Alhaj Mahama Sherif said he has run out funds to continue the work and until government release money, he has little to do on the road.
