To provide students with a well-rounded journalism education, the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala campus, has organized a familiarization tour of major media and judicial institutions in Tamale.
As part of the tour, the students visited Zaa Multimedia, a prominent media house in the Northern Region, where they were exposed to real-time newsroom operations and broadcasting practices.
The Head of Department, Dr. Mahama Seth Sayibu, said the visit aimed to bridge the gap between theory and practice by giving students firsthand experience of the media landscape. “We intend to expose the journalism students to the realities of the industry so they can better understand the practical aspects of their training,” he stated. He emphasized the department’s commitment to delivering quality education beyond classroom instruction.

Dr. Sayibu further disclosed that the department currently runs certificate, diploma, and degree programmes in Journalism Studies, with plans underway to introduce a Master of Arts (M.A.) programme in the near future.
As part of their educational tour, the students also visited the Tamale High Court to observe live court proceedings—a move aimed at strengthening their understanding of court reporting and legal journalism.
Several students expressed appreciation for the initiative, commending Dr. Sayibu for his dedication and efforts to enhance their academic and professional development. They described the tour as an eye-opener that added significant value to their studies.
The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at UDS continues to take bold steps in ensuring students are adequately prepared to meet the demands of the ever-evolving media landscape.
