MTN Ghana has rewarded 185 Mobile Money (MoMo) agents and merchants across the five northern regions with over GHS 2 million worth of e-cash and packages, in recognition of their dedication and partnership with the telecommunications giant.

The awardees were drawn from the Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper West, and Upper East Regions, with individual e-cash prizes ranging from GHS 2,000 to GHS 20,000. Beneficiaries included small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), agents, merchants, and restaurant operators who have contributed significantly to the growth of MTN Mobile Money services.

The 2025 MoMo Agents and Merchants Awards Night, held at Mariam Hotel, brought together traditional rulers, business owners, and top management of MTN Ghana, providing a platform for networking and discussions on improving businesses through mobile money transactions.

This year awards recorded an increase in female award recipients this year, with more women being recognized compared to the previous edition.

Speaking to media at the event, Senior Manager in charge of Commercial Operations for Northern Ghana, Mr. Simon Amoh, said the mobile money business in the northern sector had seen significant growth in revenue, transactions, and customer adoption, describing 2025 as “a great year for the MoMo business.”

According to Mr. Amoh, MTN’s success in the mobile money space is driven largely by agents and merchants.

“Without our agents and merchants, MTN would not be where it is today,” he said. He disclosed that MTN has invested over GHS 2 million in rewarding its key partners across the five northern regions, adding that all 185 awardees received e-cash and additional MTN-branded packages in recognition of their loyalty.

Mr. Amoh also announced that MTN would soon roll out new security innovations to help protect customers from MoMo fraud. One such innovation, he said, would allow customers to dial an agent’s identification number instead of leaving their phone numbers with agents, reducing the risk of fraud.

He reiterated MTN’s call on customers not to share their PIN codes, noting that fraud affects not only mobile money but also the banking and insurance sectors. He stressed the need for industry-wide collaboration to stay ahead of fraudsters.

The Chief Commercial Operations Officer of Mobile Money Limited, Mr. Abdul Razak Issaka Ali, said the awards night was meant to celebrate the journey of MoMo and MTN’s partnership with key stakeholders.

“Our agents and merchants are the reason MTN Mobile Money is where it is today,” he stated.

Mr. Abdul Razak explained that MoMo services have evolved beyond basic money transfers to include payments, savings, and loan services, adding that more innovations are in the pipeline to make financial services more convenient for customers.

He encouraged awardees to work harder to qualify for even bigger rewards in 2026.

An agent and merchant awardee, Hajia Sirena Abdulai, expressed gratitude to MTN for the recognition and urged customers to continue using mobile money for its safety and convenience, noting that cash transactions carry greater risks.

The overall winner in the merchant category in the Upper East Region, Mr. John Boridem of Stefan Akobre Enterprise in Navrongo, received GHS 15,000 in e-cash. He said after missing out on the award last year, his team improved their services and emerged winners this year.

Mr. Boridem pledged continued excellence in service delivery and appealed to MTN management to strengthen measures to prevent fraud, which he said often leads to customer accounts being blocked.
