The people of Karaga District joined the rest of the country in a colourful celebration of the 69th anniversary of Ghana’s Independence Day, with a strong call for collective efforts to improve education in the district. The event, held at the Karaga AstroTurf, attracted a large gathering of parents, teachers, students, and community members who turned up in their numbers to witness the annual independence parade.
School children drawn from various basic and junior high schools across the district thrilled the audience with impressive march-past displays. The pupils, smartly dressed in neatly ironed and colourful school uniforms, marched confidently to the admiration of the cheering spectators who filled the venue.
Addressing the gathering, the District Chief Executive for Karaga, Iddrisu Yakubu Dasana, highlighted the district assembly’s efforts to improve educational infrastructure and learning conditions.
He disclosed that a total of 2,215 dual desks supplied by the Northern Development Authority had been distributed to schools across the district to address the persistent furniture deficit in classrooms.
According to him, the assembly has also completed the construction of about 18 classroom blocks across the district. These facilities include office spaces and 22-seater toilet facilities to improve sanitation in schools.
Hon. Dasana further indicated that teachers’ quarters fitted with mechanised borehole has been constructed at Nyansabiga to provide decent accommodation for teachers and improve teaching and learning, especially in rural areas.
The DCE admitted that academic performance in the district has not been satisfactory over the years. He therefore called on parents, teachers, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to work together to develop a practical roadmap aimed at improving the district’s educational system.

He noted that such a coordinated approach would significantly enhance the academic performance of students in the district.
Hon. Dasana also appealed to residents of the district to support the assembly’s leadership in its quest to bring development to the area.
“It is only through dedication and collective support that we can achieve the development aspirations of our district,” he stressed.
He announced that within the next month, the assembly will undertake additional projects to strengthen educational infrastructure. These include the construction of a three-unit classroom block at Laaduwa, a three-unit JHS classroom block at Pishegu, and the supply of 1,000 metal dual desks with wooden finishing to schools across the district.
The DCE also commended teachers in the district for their dedication and sacrifices in nurturing the future generation.
“I would also like to use this opportunity to thank our gallant teachers for the sacrifices they have made and continue to make to ensure that our pupils and students can compete with their counterparts both nationally and internationally,” he said.
He concluded by reminding citizens that the theme for this year’s celebration serves as a reminder for all Ghanaians to remain committed to protecting and defending the independence and unity of Ghana.
The celebration ended with renewed patriotism and a shared commitment among residents to contribute towards the development of the district and the nation as a whole.
