Zabzugu District, May 3, 2026 — In a renewed demonstration of commitment to education, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Zabzugu Constituency, Alhaji Alhassan Umar, has donated 1,136 mathematical sets to candidates preparing to sit for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), scheduled to begin tomorrow, Monday, May 4.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Hon. MP explained that the intervention forms part of his sustained efforts to promote academic excellence and ensure that candidates in the Zabzugu District are adequately equipped for the examinations.
According to the Hon. MP, mathematical sets remain essential tools for BECE candidates, particularly in Mathematics and Technical Drawing, and the intervention is intended to eliminate any possible disadvantage arising from lack of learning materials.
Addressing the candidates directly, Hon. Alhassan urged them to remain focused and committed to their studies, expressing confidence in their ability to excel in the examination.
“I urge you to give off your best and come out with flying colours,” he stated, adding that their success would significantly contribute to the development of the district.
Elaborating on his broader vision, the Hon. MP noted that strong academic performance would, in the long run, produce professionals such as engineers, health workers, teachers, lawyers and entrepreneurs who would serve as critical human resource for the Zabzugu District.
Meanwhile, statistics from the District Education Directorate indicate that a total of 1,137 candidates drawn from 20 schools will participate in the examination.
Breaking down the figures, 1,126 candidates, representing 99.0%, are from 19 public schools, while 11 candidates, representing 1.0%, are from one private school.
In terms of gender distribution, the data shows that 636 candidates (55.9%) are males, while 501 (44.1%) are females, reflecting a gender gap of 11.8% in favour of males.
In terms of logistics and examination readiness, authorities have confirmed that the BECE will be conducted at three designated centres across the Zabzugu District, with adequate supervisory arrangements in place to ensure a smooth and credible exercise.
At the same event, the District Chief Executive for Zabzugu District, George Lakoba Tanei, and the NDC Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Alidu Bawah, were present to show institutional support for the initiative.

Also present, were the District Health Insurance Manager, Mr Zakaria Abdul-Rahaman, and other constituency executives who joined in endorsing the intervention.
Finally, educationists who attended the ceremony commended the MP for his consistent support for education, describing the gesture as timely and impactful.
According to them, the donation is expected to boost candidates’ confidence and improve their performance, while strengthening academic standards in the Zabzugu District.
