Traditional authorities in Tamale have assured the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) of their full support for the implementation of the Tamale–Damongo Water Supply Project.

According to the chiefs, any deliberate effort by government aimed at addressing the perennial water shortages in the Northern and Savannah regions will receive their blessings and cooperation.

The assurance was given when the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, paid separate courtesy calls on traditional leaders in Tamale as part of ongoing stakeholder consultations ahead of the commencement of the project.

The GWL managing Director visits were intended to officially inform the chiefs about the dedicated funding source secured by government for the project, as well as brief them on the social impact assessment, right-of-way acquisition, compensation processes and other preparatory activities.

Mr. Mutawakilu is leading a high-powered delegation of GWL management to the project implementation areas to engage key stakeholders before work begins on the €106 million grant-funded project.

As part of the consultations, the delegation paid courtesy calls on the Northern Regional Minister, the Gukpe Naa and the Tamale Dakpema to update them on progress made so far and seek their support for the successful implementation of the project.

The Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive and the Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive also addressed the traditional authorities, explaining government’s commitment to the project and the progress achieved toward its execution. The chiefs expressed gratitude to government for taking decisive steps to provide a lasting solution to one of the major challenges confronting residents in the area.

They urged government to sustain its efforts to ensure the availability of potable water throughout the year.

Speaking on behalf of the Gukpe Naa, the Gukpegu Wulana commended the management of Ghana Water Limited and President John Dramani Mahama for honouring commitments made to the people regarding improved water supply.

At the palace of the Tamale Dakpema, Mr. Mutawakilu reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the project once construction begins.

Mr. Mutawakilu further explained measures GWL has undertaken since March this year to improve water supply in Tamale and surrounding communities. He noted that the interventions have helped stabilize water production while long-term solutions are being pursued through the Tamale–Damongo Water Supply Project.
