Depression is a hidden ailment no one wants to talk about. People become depressed because of mental or emotional pressure. Many times life just becomes too hard with all the complications and hardships. People feel lonely and sometimes ashamed because of their depression which stops them from asking for help. Yet, many do not realize that their condition will not get better without help.
According to a psychiatric nurse, Mr. Isaac Borlu, depression is a common but serious mood disorder, which causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working.
To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks. Mr. Borlu outlined some of the factors of depression as persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood, feelings of hopelessness, or pessimism, irritability, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness.
Other factors include loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities, decreased energy or fatigue, moving or talking more slowly, feeling restless or having trouble sitting still, difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions, difficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping, appetite or weight changes, thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts.
The general population, he says, is at risk of depression but studies have shown that women are at a higher risk. Depression, he noted, is a mental disorder which starts between the ages of 30 and 45 but in some selected cases can happen before the age limit hence the need for self-love and appreciation. He encouraged the public to be happy in life and never give up in life no matter the situation. Life he says can be full of disappointments but suddenly not the end of the world. BY: LILIAN D. WALTER
