Take keen interest in street naming and property addressing system- gov’t directs MMDAs
Government has directed the entire 26 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDCs) in the northern region to take keen interest in Ghana’s street naming and property addressing system policy.
The MMDCs has also been directed to take steps to ensure that sub-district structures and urban, zonal councils are revamped and are working to play their respected roles in the implementation of the government street naming and property address systems.
LI 1589 (local government, urban, zonal and town councils and unit committees) establishment instrument, 1994, stipulates that sub-district structures are to be recommend to the MMDAs the naming of all roads in its area of authority and cause all building in the streets to the be numbered. This however faced a lot of challenges over the years.
Addressing the MMDAs at a street naming and property addressing (SNPA) Orientation for key district actors in Tamale, Northern Regional Minister said the challenged to governments is the sub-district structures are still not functioning.
He urged MMDCEs to take steps to ensure that sub-district structures in their jurisdictions are activated to play their respective roles in the implementation of the street naming exercise.
The street naming and property addressing policy when properly implemented according to Mr Ziedeng will among other things benefits improve emergency response services, boots revenue collection and facilitate the operations of business as well as easy location of land and properties.
The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Baba Jamal said a lot of work has been done since the president directed them when he was the vice president.
Mr Jamal assured the MMDAs that funs will soon made available for the projet to take after has it has piloted about 11 districts in the Western which has made the ministry to come out with a manul to help implementers of the project.
Participants were taken through characteristics of SNPA system, institutional/infrastructure requirements and spatial data needs (including ground truthing) by officials of ministry of local government and rural development.
