Tamale, August 15, 2025 — Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has fulfilled a pledge to fund the tuition fees of 47 continuing medical students in the Tamale Central Constituency. The gesture continues an initiative started by the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, former MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

Hon. Iddrisu released GHC188,000 on Wednesday to cover the students’ fees for the current academic year. The beneficiaries are enrolled in various universities across the country and are pursuing different levels of medical training.

The Education Minister made the commitment during the final funeral rites of Dr. Murtala Muhammed earlier this year, promising to carry forward his predecessor’s support until all the students complete their medical education.

Speaking at the presentation, Hon. Iddrisu said the move was not only a tribute to the late MP but also a way to sustain his vision of helping young people access higher education. “Leadership is not just about the positions we hold, but the lives we touch daily,” he noted. “By continuing this initiative, we are investing in hope and honouring a legacy of service.”

The late Dr. Murtala Muhammed began sponsoring the students as part of efforts to bridge the doctor-patient gap in the Northern Region and improve healthcare delivery. Both he and Hon. Iddrisu have been known for initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for young people in their constituencies.

Beneficiaries of the programme are expected to become part of Ghana’s future healthcare workforce, including doctors and surgeons who will serve communities for generations.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Haruna Institute, Abdul-Ganiyu Sandow, described the intervention as a “noble gesture” that should inspire others to support worthy causes. “With every act of kindness comes blessings. No dream should be cut short for lack of means,” he said.
