Former Member of Parliament for the Choggu/Tishigu Constituency and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Ibrahim Adam, has reportedly passed away.
Hon. Ibrahim Adam, an animal scientist and veteran politician, was a prominent figure in Ghana’s political history and played significant roles in the country’s transition into the Fourth Republic.
Beginning his public service career in agriculture, he served as Secretary for Agriculture from 1992 to 1993 under the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings, before being appointed Minister for Food and Agriculture, a position he held from 1993 to 1996.
Beyond his ministerial responsibilities, Hon. Ibrahim Adam entered parliamentary politics and was elected Member of Parliament for the Choggu/Tishigu Constituency in the 1996 general elections. He subsequently served in Ghana’s Second Parliament of the Fourth Republic from 1997 to 2001.
After his tenure in Parliament, he continued to contribute to Ghana’s agricultural sector and later served as Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) during the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama.
However, his political journey was not without controversy. Hon. Ibrahim Adam became a prominent figure in Ghana’s political and legal history following his conviction in the high-profile Quality Grain Company case in the early 2000s, for which he served a two-year prison sentence at the Kumasi Prisons.
Following his release from prison, his return to the Northern Region was met with a massive show of support. A large number of NDC supporters, sympathisers and relatives gathered to welcome the former Minister as he returned to Tamale.
In a remarkable display of solidarity, an entourage of supporters on motorcycles, bicycles, horses and other means of transport reportedly spent about three hours traversing the more than 13-kilometre distance from the Tamale-Kumasi Police Barrier to escort Mr Adam into Tamale, amidst cheers and celebrations.
As the procession approached Tamale, residents and sympathisers lined the Tamale-Bolgatanga road to catch a glimpse of the former Minister. At various points along the route, Mr Adam was reportedly compelled to step out of his vehicle, while some relatives and supporters were overcome with emotion and shed tears.
Despite the weather conditions, Mr Adam later addressed a political rally at Savelugu, where he expressed profound gratitude to the people for the overwhelming welcome extended to him. He defied the rainfall to speak to supporters and reaffirm his commitment to political and public life.
Years after these events, Hon. Ibrahim Adam continued to remain associated with political activities within the National Democratic Congress and retained a reputation as a veteran of the party and a significant figure in Northern Ghanaian politics.
Hon. Ibrahim Adam passed away on August 30, 2026. His death has since triggered an outpouring of tributes from political figures, party supporters, friends and associates across the country.
Among those paying tribute is Sagnarigu MP Atta Issah, who described Hon. Ibrahim Adam as a foundational mentor whose wisdom, experience and dedication contributed significantly to the growth of the NDC and development initiatives across northern Ghana.
With his passing, Ghana has lost a veteran public servant and politician whose career spanned agricultural administration, parliamentary representation, political organisation and public service, leaving a notable mark on the country’s political history.
