The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala Campus, has inaugurated the University’s branch of the Journalism and Media Students Association of Ghana (JAMSAG) as part of efforts to strengthen its presence and promote student participation in professional media development.
The association is expected to serve as the mouthpiece of journalism students on the Nyankpala Campus and provide a rallying platform for academic, professional, and extracurricular engagement.
Speaking at the launch, a senior lecturer in the Department of Humanities and Social Science Education, Dr. Abdul Razak Inusah, underscored the importance of clarity and precision in journalistic practice. He urged students to prioritize accuracy in their work, stressing that ambiguous reporting undermines credibility. Dr. Inusah encouraged the students to think critically, ask probing questions, and rigorously verify facts before publishing.
The Dean of Students of the University for Development Studies, Professor Haruna Umar, described the university as a place where knowledge is nurtured to shape students for future success. He advised the budding journalists to take inspiration from accomplished media professionals and emulate their discipline, consistency, and commitment to truth.

Head of the Department of Journalism, Dr. Seth Mahama Sayibu—a seasoned journalist—highlighted the need for JAMSAG as a bridge between classroom theory and real-world media practice. He revealed that the department has already embarked on educational tours to media organisations as part of efforts to expose students to professional newsroom environments. He urged members of the association to remain factual, credible, and balanced in their reporting.
President of JAMSAG, Janet Asentewaa, acknowledged the challenges confronting journalism students but expressed confidence in the association’s future. She pledged to lead with dedication and humility, assuring that her team is committed to elevating the department’s image and strengthening student engagement.
