Mahama pledges government support to complete new Gbewaa Palace as Yaa Naa Abukari II’s legacy
YENDI — President John Dramani Mahama has pledged the government’s commitment to supporting the completion of the new Gbewaa Palace, describing the project as one of the most enduring legacies of the late Yaa Naa Abukari II.
Speaking at the enskinment ceremony of the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu Mahama, in Yendi, President Mahama said the late Overlord’s vision of constructing a befitting palace for the Dagbon Kingdom must be fulfilled as a lasting tribute to his leadership.
According to the President, completing the palace would not only provide Dagbon with a fitting traditional seat but also serve as a permanent monument to the late Yaa Naa Abukari II’s contributions to peace, unity and development in the Kingdom.
To this end, President Mahama announced that he would immediately direct the appropriate government authorities to mobilise the necessary resources and take the requisite steps towards ensuring the completion of the monumental project.
In paying tribute to the late Yaa Naa Abukari II, the President described him as a remarkable peacemaker whose reign was characterised by unity, reconciliation and stability, qualities which, he said, had left an indelible mark on Dagbon and Ghana as a whole.
Beyond the palace project, President Mahama noted that the peace achieved in Dagbon during the late Overlord’s reign had created an enabling environment for development, urging the people of the Kingdom to protect and sustain that peace for the benefit of present and future generations.
Meanwhile, the enskinment ceremony attracted thousands of people from across Ghana and beyond, transforming Yendi into a vibrant centre of traditional pageantry and national significance as the people of Dagbon marked another important moment in the history of the Kingdom.
Among those in attendance were eminent chiefs and queen mothers, political leaders from across the political divide, members of the diplomatic corps, religious leaders, government officials, representatives of traditional councils and dignitaries from various ethnic communities, who gathered to witness the installation of the new Regent of Dagbon.
Also paying tribute to the late Yaa Naa Abukari II was the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, who represented former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the ceremony.In his tribute, the NPP flagbearer praised the late Overlord for the significant development and progress achieved during his reign, particularly his contribution to peace and stability in Dagbon.
In conclusion, he called on traditional authorities, political leaders and all stakeholders to work collectively to preserve, strengthen and build upon the legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari II for the benefit of generations yet unborn.
