Tamale, December 1, 2025 — The IGP Special Operations Team has arrested 32 suspects in a series of intelligence-led operations across the Tamale Metropolis, targeting drug dens, criminal gangs, and suspected stolen items.
The operation began at Sanzhirigu, where officers stormed a house reportedly used for the sale and consumption of illicit drugs. Five suspects were arrested, and quantities of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, along with Koffex cough syrup, were seized.

The team then moved to the Aboabo Forest, a location believed to be a hideout for armed gangs involved in robbery and drug trafficking. A coordinated swoop led to the arrest of 27 additional suspects.
Police retrieved several exhibits, including large quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, opioid tablets, six motorbikes suspected to be stolen, and three mobile phones believed to be stolen property.
During the Aboabo operation, officers came under sudden gunfire from a group of armed criminals. The police returned fire in what they described as a necessary act of self-defense, leading to one suspect being shot.
The officers attempted to evacuate the injured suspect to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was later deposited at the morgue for autopsy. The remaining armed individuals fled the area with their weapons as reinforcements arrived.
All suspects were transported to the District Charge Office and the Sakasaka Police Station for further investigation. The suspected narcotics have been handed over for forensic analysis, while the motorbikes and mobile phones are being held for verification.
ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil commended the professionalism and discipline exhibited by the team, noting that their swift response prevented casualties among officers and civilians.
The Ghana Police Service says the operation is part of broader efforts to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety within the Tamale Metropolis.
