The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana police in the Northern Region say it is dangerous for victims especially, married women to shield perpetrators of domestic violence.
DOVVSU said the practice where victims especially married women hide under the pretext of protecting their marriages which is predominant in the region has long time effects on couples.
DOVVSU is therefore urging couples to report any form of abuse to DOVVSU for redress. The responsibility of reporting domestic violence it explained does not rest on only victims but the general public and urged residents to report any form of domestic violence in their communities to the police.
Northern Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, ASP Emmanuel Holortu stated this when he addressed over five second cycle institution students and selected parents at a community sensitization on domestic violence in Tamale organised by Cama Ghana, a subsidiary organization of Campaign for Female Education (Camfed).
ASP Holortu disclosed that women constitute about 82 percent of victims of domestic violence cases reported. He said is not only men who perpetrate the acts of domestic violence but women report perpetrators than men.
ASP Emmanuel Holortu said domestic violence affects mothers, children and the whole families. The principal of Bible College in Kumbungu, Reverend James Abdulai reiterated the important role women play in the society and called for more harmonious homes devoid of any violence. Reverend James Abdulai advised young women benefiting from Cama to take the opportunity seriously in order to better their lives.
