Millions of tons of human excrete is being poured out in Asia, Africa and Latin America. More than 2.8 million people have no access to sanitation globally.
The chairman of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), Dr Kamal Kar disclosed this at the ongoing training workshop in Tamale on sanitation. Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) are intensifying efforts to solve this problem.
CLTS with support from the UNICEF at an intensive workshop in Tamale dubbed; scaling up CLTS; making northern region open defecation free (ODF) brought together representatives from various communities, University for Development Studies (UDS), School of Hygiene among others.
The chairman of CLTS, Dr Kamal Kar took participants through difference methods to be use in their various communities.
The CLTS team is also providing the participants with in-depth knowledge on how other countries approach to the CLTS method has help in enhancing their sanitation. According to the CLTS team, going to communities to impact what has been learnt is the best approach in dealing with the sanitation issued in the northern region.
The trainers will on Friday 31st of May 2013 and 1st June 2013 visit communities such as Sung, kpachi and Kpalga.
The CLTS team earlier visited some communities in the Savelugu municipality and educated the community members on proper sanitation practices.
On Thursday, some members from Savelugu paid a visit to the venue of the training in Tamale and attested to fact that, the training from CLTS has helped them in ensuring good sanitary practices at their surroundings.
