A Public Health Specialist at Tamale Teaching Hospital, Alhaji Tahiru Mustapha has advised the general public to continue to adhere to safety protocols amid the arrival of Delta variant in Ghana. He said he is perturbed about the general disinterest and disregard for the Covid-19 safety protocols among the Ghanaian public especially after the country recorded the Delta variant of Covid-19.
According to Alhaji Tahiru Mustapha, the confirmation of the highly transmissible variant in Ghana has heightened concerns in the country. He said if these protocols are not strictly observed it will be difficult for the country to survive should there be a need for a lockdown.
In spite of the stringent measures outlined by the Government to manage the spread of the virus including the mandatory wearing of masks, social distancing protocols at public events, the rigorous public education, the maximum number of 100 participants at gatherings, it appears citizens have reverted to a lifestyle prior to the global pandemic.
Alhaji Tahiru in an interview with Zaa news stated that the disregard for the Covid-19 protocols by the citizenry is a potential recipe of disaster comparable to other countries ravaged by the Delta variant of the virus.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recorded 34 active cases of the Delta Variant of the Covid-19 in some communities in Ghana, including some students of Achimota School, who tested positive. He said the Delta Variant, which originated from India, has a higher transmission rate and spreads faster than other Covid-19 strains, hence the need for the public to obey the safety protocols directed by the Health authorities.
The Delta Variant has been found in communities in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions. It is currently found in 98 countries worldwide. The Public Health Specialist however wants some form of punishment to be served people who violate the safety protocols.
