Four districts get youth friendly centers

Youth from four Districts in the Northern Region will no longer shy away from expressing themselves about issues pertaining to their sexual reproductive health.

This is because friendly centers called Adolescent Health Corners have been set up by a nongovernmental organization, Northern Sector Action on Awareness Center (NORSAAC) in Karaga, Central Gonja, Kumbungu and Mion district health facilities. 

The setting up of the centers was to help reduce young people struggling to access sexual and reproductive health care due to stigma, lack of information and the cultural believe that adults should not talk to young people about their sexuality.

Explaining the  adolescent corners program at the inauguration of the Karaga center to Zaa News, Head of Programs and Policy of NORSAAC Hafsatu Sey Sumani said the centers will serve as private space for the young ones to go for counseling on contraception to enable them make an inform and good choice.

The adolescent health corners program is a partnership with NORSAAC, SMAVI and Axis youth program on sexual health. Under the program, more than 10000 young people will receive reproductive health information and some commodities such as condemns. 

The well-equipped Karaga adolescent corner   has, condoms, Plasma TV programmed for sexually reproductive health issues, Examination bed, DVD player, indoor and outdoor games in well-furnish office as well as water reservoir at the cost of ten thousand Ghana cedis. (10,000). 

The NORSAAC programs and policy head made passionate appeal to government to Ghana health services to improve on the existing youth friendly service and provide areas where the facilities are lacking. This, she said, will go a long to reducing teenage pregnancies and illegal abortions. 

Madam Hafsatu commended the beneficiary district assembly’s health and education directorates for their cooperation and urged them to take good care of the facilities. 

The midwife and acting public health officer in the Karaga hospital Hajia Fati Yakubu thanked NORSAAC for their intervention and said it will help reduce alarming teenage pregnancy in the district.

Hajia Fati encourage the youth in the area to make good use of the facility for the betterment of their furniture. She assured the youth of the hospital commitment to providing their health needs stressing that, train health personnel will always be available for their services.

Abdulai Safaia who spoke on behalf of her colleagues promised to encourage youth in the area to patronize the services of the center.
The Assistant Director of the Karaga assembly, Ernest Asante Akrasi on behalf of the District Chief executive for the area commended the NGO for their support and assured that the assembly had plans to put in place adolescent policy to help address problems confronting the youth.
