Only 19.2 % of roads in the Northern region in good condition – Roads minister

A total 65 different roads projects in the northern are to be constructed by the government before the end of 2020,  Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoaku-Attah has announced.

The earmarked roads according to him are at different stages of procurement for work to commence.

The region has a total road network size of 6,834kilometers out of 78,000 kilometers road network size nationwide.
Of the number, 1,318.2kilometers representing 19.2% are considered to be in good shape.

Two thousand two hundred and four point four (2,204.1) kilometers representing 32.2% considered to be fair. 

Mr Amoaku – Attah who was addressing the media in Tamale said 3,312.7 and 3,313 kilometers representing 48.6% considered to be in poor conditions.

The sector minister in a breakdown of the projects said 3 are with the Ghana Highways authority, 14 with urban roads and 63 with the department of urban roads.

The ministry, Mr Amoaku-Attah explained will now start with the identification of roads to establish the scope of work to be down before publishing them in the dailies for potential contractors to bid.


On bridges, the minister said government is constructing two bridges with over 230 meters long span in about 11.7meters width.

The construction he explained is being positioned in different stages to ensure it does not distract vehicular movement.
The two bridges are Yepei and Buipe. He also announced that, a contractor will be appointed to start on the Daboya Bridge next two weeks.

The Daboya Bridge when completed will serve as an alternative to both Yepei and Buipe
